Instituto de Biotecnologia UNAM

Background

The Institute of Biotechnology (IBT), previously the Center for Research in Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology (CIIGB, or also CEINGEBI), was founded back in april 1982, starting its activities inside the Institute of Biomedical Research.

In 1985, CEINGEBI moved to IBT's nowadays location in Cuernavaca. A 25,000 square meters terrain (8,500 m2, construction), inside the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM). The terrain was a share by UAEM to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

CEINGEBI started its activities with nine Researchers. In 1990, it had already 38 of them into 14 Work groups. In January 1991, 16 research members from the Unit of Molecular Biology & Plant Biotechnology of the Center for Research in Nitrogen Fixation (CIFN), joined CEINGEBI. This group is responsible now of developing Plant Molecular Biology & Biotechnology at IBT.

CEINGEBI got its status as IBT, by the UNAM Council, in September 14, 1991.

IBT counts now 90 Researchers (43 Titular Researchers, and 47 Associated Researchers), 60 Academic Technitians, and more than 190 Graduate Students (about 60 of them working for a PhD).
