Resumen:
Converging nano-bio-technologies have proven to hold great promise for developing innovative platforms with potential use in emerging applications, e.g., diagnostic devices, imaging contrast agents, drug delivery and therapeutic systems. Novel properties and nanomaterials' functions, from their dimensions, differ from the concomitant bulk materials counterparts [1]. Rational design of biological structures and their assembly with nanomaterials allows on-demand development of nanobioengineered platforms with improved properties and outstanding performance. In this context, new nanobiotechnology-enabled devices aim to provide a convenient real-time diagnosis of diseases closer to the patient and opportunities for more efficient drug delivery and targeted therapeutics concerning conventional technologies. This talk is aimed to discuss novel hybrid nano-bioengineered materials-based functional platforms that have been developed in our group for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. In the first part, it will highlight innovative approaches regarding i) Biosensors for the specific and highly sensitive bacteria [2] and parasite [3] detection in simple formats, ii) Novel superior, hybrid nano(bio)platforms for the development of enzymatic (bio)sensors of improved performance [4-6]; and iii) Differential nanogenosensors for diagnosis of Zika virus and its discrimination among related viruses such as dengue and chikungunya [7, 8] and advances on nanobiosensors for SARS-CoV-2 detection. In the second part, the talk will cover aspects related to iv) New strategies for encapsulation of therapeutic agents into functionalized nanoparticles to fight intracellular infections [9]; and v) Functionalized photosensitive polymeric nanocarriers for specific delivery of cargo into cardiomyocytes [10] and micromotors for enzyme protection and dynamic substrate degradation. Overall, the talk will demonstrate nanomaterials' enormous potential for tackling real problems in today's world and highlight their opportunities for multiple clinical diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
